The Illusion, a narrative fiction piece Synopsis: AIDS in the black community is killing black women at a higher rate than men. Statistics say that AIDS is the second cause of death for African American women ages 25 to 44. In 1992, one out of every 160 African American woman was infected with HIV, a rate that is now higher in 2005. This is partially due, some say, to the fact that black women are sleeping with men who are assumed to be heterosexual, but are oftentimes bi-sexual. This is a scary reality for not just single women, but for married women also. This new, but old phenomenon, “down low” has become a hot topic amongst the black community, discussing the reasons why black men don’t profess their bi-sexuality to women and how they live a secret and double-life. With constant articles being written in Essence, Ebony, Vibe and various other African-American targeted magazines dealing with brothers on the ‘Down Low’, it sparked an interest in me to tell the story of a young black woman who gets caught up in this illusion; is he gay or is it an illusion?
